Descended from the Lorell Raiders, the heavily matriarchal Hapes Consortium is the sixty-three worlds of the Hapes Cluster with Dathomir forming the sixty-fourth. They are a very wealthy people, as many of the worlds have rare and incredibly valuable mineral resources. While early on the Hapans were extremely isolationist, they began opening up to the galaxy around the time of the Galactic Civil War after an alliance between Queen Mother Ta'a Chume and representatives of the New Republic. Following her daughter, Tenel Ka's reign beginning in 27 ABY, the Hapans became a main source of the Jedi Order's funds and their staunchest supporters. Many Queen Mothers were even Jedi-trained themselves, as the Force ran strong in the royal family following their intermarriage with the Skywalker family.

The Hapans accepted Kinsaris Karu in his exile after the Emperor ousted him, keeping him under house arrest until the Imperial Civil War in 511 ABY. He charmed the Queen Mother Jaina Dai, and when the Empire began warring against itself she called on him to assist her defense forces. He soon rose to the head of the royal military by virtue of his extraordinary strategical and political acumen, where he oversaw extensive renovations in the organizational structure and mission focus of the Hapan forces.

The Hapans were formerly faithful allies of the New Republic and the Galactic Alliance, but had distanced themselves in recent decades as the galaxy became enveloped in chaos and the Hapans withdrew from galactic politics. Nonetheless, when the Alliance joined the Galactic Empire in their war against the Sith, the Hapans dispatched a massive fleet under Royal High Commander Kinsaris Karu to assist. The purpose of their fleet was twofold; first to show support and help defeat the Sith menace, and secondly to show the galaxy that the Hapes Consortium had the power to retain its independence against any foe. The Hapan Royal Fleet acquitted itself spectacularly well against the Sith, and is credited with the Sith forces being stalemated in their push into the galactic northeast.
