FORCE POWERS
- Battle Precognition - A natural talent rather than a trained technique, Katarina can see half a second into the future while in battle and react accordingly. The ability is not perfect and frequently falters, but it can provide her an immense advantage in hand-to-hand combat.
The Force will also sometimes grant Katarina forewarning of coming threats and conflicts - though it was curiously silent on the rise of the Sith. - Drain Knowledge - A dark art, Katarina knows how to rip the secrets from an enemy's mind. She can copy their memories, probing through their minds to learn everything they know and reveal their deepest secrets. This power, however, is limited by the constraints of her own ability to remember - Katarina does not gain any special ability to memorize the stolen knowledge. She can also erase knowledge from someone's memory, but that is faulty and tends to leave fragments behind.
- Electric Judgment - A pale mirror of the more infamous Sith Lightning, this technique conjures up a purer form of electricity by exciting atoms rather than twisting and warping the universe. In its strongest form it can wound or kill (and is all but indistinguishable from natural lightning), but more commonly the technique only saps strength and willpower.
- Essence Transfer - Quite probably the most dangerous technique Katarina knows, this requires her to surrender her life in order to form a sort of phantom that can possess another living body. While ideally, the body is a clone - or at least brain-dead - she can attempt to suppress the mind of a body and wrest control of it from its original owner.
Katarina has not even hinted knowledge of this ability to her fellow Imperial Knights, lest they discover the truth about her. - Force Armor - Though use of this light side technique most commonly takes the form of a glimmering aura of protective telekinetic energy about Katarina, when she draws deeply on the Force she can form pseudo-solid glowing crystalline armor that floats above her person, absorbing incoming attacks and protecting her from harm. She can use this power on others as well as herself, though spreading it out dilutes the effect and increases the drain on her.
- Force Healing - Though Katarina was never a very skilled healer, of late she has been able to only temporarily heal injuries, and she tends to leave unsightly, even gruesome, scars when she does so, and the effect is sometimes partially or even completely temporary. Because of this, and knowing the reason why, she tries to avoid using the Force to heal as much as possible and relies on more mundane healing techniques such as bacta healing fluids.
- Force Valor - This light side power increases the resolve, accuracy, and speed of Katarina and her allies. Tapping into the Force, she can increase the rate at which their capabilities function and allow her comrades and herself to move more quickly, strike more powerfully, and fight with improved accuracy. This was one of the first uses of the Force that Katarina learned, back when she was studying the lightsaber as a girl.
- Force Sense - Katarina can use the Force to expand and enhance her perceptions, though doing so takes concentration.
Katarina is able to read the surface thoughts and emotions of another living creature. Use of this power is far more passive than expanding her perceptions. - Force Suppression - A Force technique used to attack the will of the target, wiping out active Force powers and interrupting their concentration by momentarily blocking off their connection to the Force. This technique takes a great deal of focus to accomplish, and thus is all but useless in, say, a grapple.
- Force Trance - Similar to morichro, this technique allows Katarina to go into a very deep hibernation state. This slows her metabolism and breathing to a standstill, allowing her to use only one-tenth the normal amount off air. She can remain in this state for up to one week in a dry climate or one month in a wet climate before dying of dehydration. Katarina sometimes uses this technique to appear dead, though she's been known to sometimes forget to let her comrades know when she's going to use a trance rather than sleep normally.
- Force Weapon - Katarina is able to imbue a weapon with the Force for a period of time by channeling energy into it. She is fond of combining this with another power by 'charging' them into her weapon using powers such as electric judgment, ionize, or telekinetic attacks. A weapon so imbued with the Force is surpassingly resilient, able to resist even a lightsaber.
- Ionize - Commonly known as droid stun, though its use is not limited to droids, this light side technique enables the Jedi to remotely deactivate or destroy droids and electronics by overloading their circuitry. It was developed into the more potent Electric Judgment power.
- Mind Trick - Katarina excels at mental manipulations. Her most common application is something like hypnosis, using the Force with little nudges and bumps to make her words far more persuasive than they would be ordinarily. However, through channeling sufficient power she can make someone believe as she commands - if only briefly.
- Shatterpoint - Katarina's most dangerous ability - and not just to her enemies - she is able to sense the vulnerabilities in objects, creatures, and even events. By channeling Force energies through them, she can damage and destroy them. Objects are by far the easiest to destroy, though living things can be vulnerable to this ability as well.
- Sith Alchemy - Katarina is learned in Sith alchemy, though how she knows what she knows is a mystery to her Imperial Knight compatriots. She rarely, if ever, practices it but knows much more about a wide variety of applications ranging from imbuing dark armor to the creation of monsters than an Imperial Knight should.
- Telekinesis - Like many who train to fight with the Force, Katarina is skilled in the use of Force Telekinesis. She can exert a great deal of force, able to lift even something the size of a landspeeder and can hurl smaller objects with enormous force reaching levels near primitive slugthrowers. Her ability with fine detail work is somewhat less adept, though she can manage just fine by taking her time and being careful with it. Katarina's telekinetic talents lean more towards the defensive than the offensive, and her telekinetic attacks tend to be clumsy and brutish.
On the defensive, however, Katarina is quite adept. A very basic protective ability, raising telekinetic barriers was one of the first skills Katarina learned as she trained to become one of the Emperor's bodyguards. Katarina's barriers are quite resilient, able to repel physical attacks ranging from bullets to gas and even to the extremes of kinetic energy found in sonic weapons or railguns. - Telepathy - By using this ability, Katarina can contact another's mind and engage them in two-way communication. It does not work so well when forced, and while it can be used in conjunction with other powers cannot in and of itself be used to rip information from someone's mind.
- Tutaminis - This is one of Katarina's fortes and together with telekinesis and body-augmenting powers forms the basis of most of her Force abilities. It is a non-harmful Force drain, and the most common use of this power is for Katarina to drain the energy from an attack, whether it be a blaster bolt or lightsaber blade. It's very easy for her to use this power to modulate the damage output of her own lightsaber, and indeed many Knights use that trick while in training. Her use of this talent is not unlimited, and while lower-powered energy attacks do not exhaust her much she would have difficulty with a lightsaber or a powerful blast of Force Lightning.
SKILLS
- Katarina, like all Imperial Knights, is a trained combat pilot. She's logged over two thousand hours in training and about fifteen hundred hours in combat.
- Katarina is a habitual tinkerer and mechanic. She enjoys modifying and building things, particularly droids, but also likes to modify and customize her gear.
- As a lightsaber duelist, Katarina is fairly skillful. She much prefers the standard lightsaber, but knows how to wield the saber-staff as well.
- Katarina is a trained marksman, proficient with both the rifle and the pistol. She is familiar with and able to use nearly every weapon in the Imperial arsenal, and this enables her to operate practically all of their equivalents with minimal familiarization.
- Katarina speaks several languages, including Basic, High Galactic, Bocce, Mando'a, Huttese, and Sith. Her native language is Bocce, giving her a faint exotic accent. Though she can easily conceal her accent, and even adopt others as part of a cover identity, it often slips out when she is angry or startled.
- Katarina is proficient in the aggressive, fast-paced and hard-hitting Praetoria Vonil and the defensive Praetoria Ishu. Both forms, unique to the Imperial Knights, place greater emphasis on teamwork than on individual prowess.
Her favored form, however, is Niman. Though it has a relaxed focus on bladework, it encourages integrating Force powers into combat. Her employment of Niman is not entirely standard, as Katarina shows a strong preference for use of Djem So- and Ataru-derived techniques over those derived from the more defensive forms.
APPEARANCE
Katarina is about average height for a Human woman. She has an athletic build, though her soft appearance and well-developed curvature hide her muscles quite well. She has hazel eyes and wears her wavy light brown hair cut short, just about collar-length. Her apparent youth belies her actual age, and in truth she hasn't aged physically since the mission to Dathomir when she was twenty-four. Katarina is fairly pretty, though she doesn't much know what to do with it and feels awkward in any social situations involving romance. She has a contralto voice, and is soft-spoken and quiet except when angry.
Katarina's clothing is usually more practical than fashionable. She dresses almost like a man, though she's been known to enjoy dressing up like a girl every once in a while. She normally wears a high-collared long-sleeved shirt under a short-sleeved tunic cinched around the waist with a utility belt bearing many pouches and attached gear, fingerless armorweave gloves with leather padding, and a pair of pants tucked into calf-high leather-and-armorweave combat boots.
Katarina's armor is a form-fitting suit of crimson plates molded to fit the contours of her body over a black body glove. She does not wear the standard armor of the Imperial Knights save for formal situations.
PERSONALITY
Katarina has accepted that she has become the monster she tried to fight. She has accepted death, and even looks forward to it, but not until the Sith are destroyed and the Empire once again safe. Katarina sees no possibility for her own redemption, as she has forsaken her soul in her quest to gain power.
At times Katarina seems to demonstrate two separate personalities. One is the eager, enthusiastic girl she once was before the mission to Dathomir. The other is a much darker persona, moody and melancholy with a wisdom far beyond her years. Most of the time, though, she is somewhere between the two, sour-faced and humorless with a grim determination to fulfill her duties. When around her fellow Knights Katarina puts on the charade of being more like the girl they knew, if only to hide from them just how far she has fallen. Katarina has expressed little desire or interest in companionship, though she does tend to take something of a 'big sister' role around junior Knights.
BIOGRAPHY
Born in a time of relative peace, 491 ABY, Katarina was identified early as a Force-sensitive. Being as she was born on Bastion, the headquarters of the Imperial Knights, she was taken to join them as a child. As a page she devoted herself towards studying the art of the lightsaber in the service to her Emperor. She proved a prodigy, powerful in the Force and skilled with the blade. Kat grew to be arrogant, proud, and thoroughly devoted to the Emperor. She impressed none other than Ector Vent, the Grand Master of the Imperial Knights, and he began taking her under his wing.
Katarina was squired on her sixteenth birthday in 507 ABY, taken under the tutelage of Ector Vent. She accompanied him on numerous missions in service to the throne during the two years he trained her. Katarina was knighted at the age of eighteen and assigned to the Emperor's palace on Bastion. While she was not one of the Emperor's actual bodyguards, it was still a highly prestigious position. Katarina was, needless to say, quite proud of the assignment. Katarina was promoted to knight-errant at the age of twenty-three; like many in the palace guard, she was promoted swiftly. Suspicions of favoritism due to gender and wariness about her former close association with the Sith Lord plagued her, which led to Katarina requesting a transfer out of the palace and to the errantry branches of the Imperial Knights.
Katarina was nearly killed on a mission to Dathomir when she was twenty-four, and she alone survived out of her retinue. Her experiences there changed her, and she was cryptic and evasive in her answers during the debriefing. Losing her retinue was highly traumatic for the young knight, and she might have lost her way had it not been for the wisdom of her superiors. Rather than try to punish her, they invited her to seek peace with herself and return to the Emperor's service when she was ready. Never one to quit, Katarina resisted the idea at first, but the Emperor himself was able to convince her by demonstrating how closely to the dark side she treaded. He confronted her, pushing her to lash out in anger by taunting her about how she'd been unable to detect Ector Vent's fall before easily turning aside her ill-considered attack and bluntly laying out her options: Sabbatical, or submit to tribunal for punishment and very likely lose her lightsaber, if not cut from the Force and excommunicated.
The Imperial Knights, after all, did not take as kindly to one of their own falling to the dark side as the Jedi did.
Katarina agreed to take a vacation, distraught over how she'd tried to attack her Emperor. He gently suggested that she seek out the Jedi, as the Imperial Knights had a long and mutually amicable relationship with the Jedi Order dating back to the Second Galactic Civil War. Though both sects were devoted to the light and protection, Jedi were as devoted to peace as the Imperial Knights were to war. Katarina reluctantly agreed, to travel to the Jedi Temple on the Empress Teta. She handed her lightsaber and armor over, then boarded a registered transport headed for Alliance space.
Katarina enjoyed her time among the Jedi, much more than she'd admit. Letting her hair down and simply enjoying life at the much more leisurely pace of the New Jedi Order rather than the harsh, militant, demanding lifestyle of an Imperial Knight was a welcome change of pace for her. She studied under the Jedi, happy to show her fellow light-siders the Imperial methods and techniques in exchange. Eventually, though, when she had recovered her sanity and sense of self and felt she was able to fully serve her Emperor again, Katarina bid her friends among the Jedi farewell.
Katarina tried to return to the Imperium, but a hyperspace malfunction delayed her return. The hyperdrive burning out stranded her in Hutt space, on a barely-explored moon named Garyx. Enlisting the help of some locals, Katarina repaired her ship's hyperdrive and made for the Empire. She returned in 516 ABY, a full year after she'd left, and was quickly dispatched to the increasingly desperate front lines of the war. Katarina fought in the Defeat at Kuat, where she confronted none other than Darth Malion - Darth Adas's apprentice - and very nearly defeated the Sith Lord. Unfortunately, the Imperial rout forced Kat to retreat before she could finish the job.
In the post-war, Katarina's loyalties came into question. Not only was she trained by the Dark Lord of the Sith for much of her life, every battle she'd participated in was a disastrous Imperial loss and she'd failed to defeat Malion. Kat was summarily discharged from the Emperor's service in the post-war purges of their ranks, her armor and lightsaber destroyed and her names stricken from their records. She was exiled in disgrace, forbidden from ever again returning to the Empire on pain of death.
Katarina, contrary to expectations, did not join her former mentor in the Sith. Though heartbroken over the dismissal, she refused to give in to the dark side or join the Imperial traitors. She spent the next nine years living on the fringes of society, at times little better than a beggar. Katarina doesn't speak of her time in exile, and refuses to answer questions about what she had to do to survive.
In 528 ABY, the Emperor sent a pair of Knights to recall Katarina. She gladly returned, and has since remained steadfast and loyal in his service.
Katarina's history as the Imperial Knights know it is true, for the most part. However, her mission to Dathomir did not go nearly so well as she reported.
The true Katarina perished along with the rest of her fellows on Dathomir, but not before she mortally wounded the dark-sider they were sent to kill. Desperate to stave off death, the dark-sider's spirit plunged into the weakened Imperial Knight. The two of them fought for control of the dying body before Katarina's will was crushed, subsumed into the dark-sider's control, her memories and thoughts absorbed into the dark-sider's. He was not as expert in the technique as he could have been, and his assumption of control was incomplete.
This dark-sider was born five hundred years ago, an Anzati who studied the way of the Sith in Darth Krayt's Sith Empire. Known as Darth Tyraen, this Sith specialized in the assassination of Jedi and well-protected targets. Young for his species, he was only about a hundred years old when he joined the One Sith. He, like Katarina, was quite the prodigy. He had first started off with the Jedi, but when his cravings proved too strong for him to resist he consumed the 'soup' of a fellow Jedi Knight and in so doing irreversibly succumbed to the Dark Side of the Force. Though the guilt of this act gnawed at him, when Darth Krayt's Sith began their Jedi purge he eagerly jumped at the excuse to hunt down and consume his fellow Jedi.
When the Sith were defeated at the hands of Cade Skywalker, Tyraen slipped away to the deep reaches of the Outer Rim. Like any wise predator, he knew that he had to be cautious; not only were the numbers of his prey dangerously depleted, they were also wary of attack and no longer had the enemy faction to distract them. Darth Tyraen began seeking out alternative ways to sustain himself, and enough of his Jedi upbringing remained that he still found preying upon others intensely loathsome - even as he enjoyed the act immensely on an instinctive, animalistic level. At first Tyraen tried to space out the time between feedings, immersing himself in deep meditation in the dark of the Force, but that proved inadequate. Darth Tyraen sought out another source of soup, eventually hitting upon the planet Dathomir after decades, if not centuries, of wandering.
Once upon Dathomir, the powerful Tyraen easily took control of a group of Nightsisters. They served him not as cattle, but as chattel - he dominated their minds with his hypnotic powers, slowly brainwashing them into his willing slaves. Using his new servants, Tyraen established himself as a petty warlord on the planet and eventually carved out a kingdom under his dominion. He executed criminals himself, particularly the Force-users, and was able to not only sustain himself but thrive on the steady diet of worship and captives. Tyraen studied the midi-chlorions in an effort to master them and the very stuff of life itself.
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. After hundreds of years, Darth Tyraen's little kingdom came under Imperial scrutiny. The Emperor dispatched a team of his Knights to ascertain the nature of the disturbance. Though Tyraen had gotten lazy over the years, he had not lost his power - the former Dark Lord of the Sith was more than a match for the little group of Knights. He was not quite good enough to leave all of them alive, but they posed no real threat to him. Unfortunately, the one he kept alive to feed on only faked being controlled by his hypnotic powers. She was part Epicanthix, a near-Human species immune to hypnosis and mind tricks, and just as he was extending his tendrils to feed on her abundant soup she speared him through the heart with her lightsaber. Mortally wounded, Tyraen called on a dark side technique he'd never expected to use - or at least, not nearly so soon - and transferred his essence over to her body as he expired.
This new body was quite the change for Tyraen, and not just because of its gender or youth. The all-consuming, soul-destroying hunger for the soup of other sentients, the disease of the spirit that had plagued him for centuries, had vanished with his body. Though it did not happen quickly, Tyraen began to slowly remember the Jedi he had been as he lived for the first time in centuries free of that evil influence. He also knew from Katarina's stolen memories that the Imperial Knights would not take kindly to deserters, and thus he would have to masquerade as her - at least for a little while, as he measured time - while he sought out a more suitable situation.
At least, that's what he keeps telling himself. In the years since Tyraen stole Katarina's body, he has noticed himself becoming more and more like her, even thinking of himself as her - and the thought that he, the ancient, proud, and terrible once-king would vanish forever into a mere servant terrifies him.

DROIDS
Q7-T astro droid: Quest, a Q7-series astromech droid is an unusual astromech in that it is a hovering sphere a little under one meter in diameter. The droid's head has the standard hemispherical dome of an R2 astromech, but the underside is a matching hemisphere. The droid moves about on repulsors rather than wheels, hovering about much like a probe droid. The droid has a brushed steel dome with gelled dark blue duraplast panels, and its underside is black with similar gelled dark blue duraplast panels. The droid packs a surprising array of tools and gadgets within its spherical casing, though less than a standard R-series astromech due to its smaller size. It can fit into any standard astromech slot, extending out a ring of FrictionGrip grapnels from the horizon to secure itself into place. While the repulsorlift is more prone to breaking down than more primitive transportation methods, it allows the droid to travel faster and over rougher terrain than wheels permit.
The droid has a standard astromech navicomp, enabling it to store ten pre-programmed jump coordinates as well as calculate jumps.
SHIP
The Absolution III: Katarina's ship is a modified late-model CEC VCX-700 heavy courier. She first acquired the vessel in Hutt space, and has customized it extensively over the years. The most noteworthy modification was the addition of a 0.5 hyperdrive, but practically every system on her ship has been upgraded past mil-spec with expensive components and outlaw tech.
OOC Note: I'll put up a proper bio for her when it becomes necessary, but for now I'm too lazy to bang it out.
GEAR
- Custom Imperial Knight Armor: Though Kat stopped wearing her crimson Knight armor when she first left, she pieced together a new outfit to suit her needs - and when she returned to the Knights, she modified it again to fall within regulations. The basic components are refurbished old model Imperial Stormtrooper armor, though she's added to it and modified it extensively over the years to the point where it's barely recognizable as such. It is a form-fitting suit of molded crimson plating over a black body glove.
- Composite Plating: These composite plates are remarkably flexible, which enables individual armor plates to survive better under an impact. This absorbs kinetic energy and increases operator survivability in close-contact situations. The flexibility reduces injury caused by shockwaves from explosions and concussive devices as well, as the very nature of the design prohibits it from transferring energy as directly into the wearer as solid plates would. Their flexibility does not prevent these plates from being quite hard and resilient, however. They are coated on both sides with a thin laminate of armorplast, which offers additional protection from both energy weapons and projectiles - even able to deflect blaster bolts. The core of the plates are interlocking millimeter-sized hexes of titanium cermet bonded together with a flexible, elastic polymer for maximum durability and flexibility.
The plating can absorb two-three rifle shots in a location and even one-two cannon shots. - Cyricept Personal Concealment System, Mark IX: Rather than the body glove in common use by the Imperial Stormtroopers, Katarina employs something much more useful to someone in her line of work - a stealth suit. While it does little to conceal her if she has the plating attached, unless she's camouflaged the plating, when she detaches the plates it enables her to travel practically invisibly.
When activated, the Mark IX is able to bend different kinds of waves, including light, sound, and electromagnetic, around itself making the suit and its wearer essentially invisible. Even when the cloaking device is not activated the suit and mask are also able to raise or lower the emitting temperatures to match those around it, making the suit invisible to thermal sensors and preventing the water vapor in the wearer's breath from condensing in cold temperatures.
The middle layer of the system is packets of zersium-impregnated reactive ballistic gel sandwiched between layers of armorweave.
There is also a survival suit built into the system, and it includes a breath filter that can filter atmosphere indefinitely (provided there is sufficient oxygen in the atmosphere) or provide breathable atmosphere (as when in a vacuum or other oxygen-depleted environment) for up to an hour before the rebreather's power cell wears out. The breath filter typically links to a helmet, but can also link with an inflatable bubble helmet that stows away in the wearer's collar.
The armorweave is able to take one or two blaster shots and glancing blows from lightsabers, while the ballistic gel is able to absorb two-three blaster shots in a minute thanks to the zersium and extensive punishment from physical attacks and concussive blasts thanks to its pseudo-fluid nature. - Helmet Package: The helmet includes multi-spectrum imagers and a heads-up display capable of interfacing with most weapon systems. It provides a targeting assist by painting a reticule on the HUD, and with the multi-spectrum imagers it has the ability to see through smoke, darkness, and other low-vis conditions. The helmet also has advanced breath filters, a built-in comlink with encryption and multi-band communication capabilities, and a voice-amplifier. It also has automatic polarizing anti-flash lenses that protect against intense glare and sonic filters that protect against intense, loud, and debilitating sounds.

This absorbs kinetic energy and increases operator survivability in close-contact situations. - BasTech DT-57 "Annihilator" superheavy blaster pistol: Katarina's blaster is standard for the type - packing a heavy punch without loss of range. She keeps it loaded with rechargeable power packs. The pistol is accurate out to eighty meters, and can draw fifty shots from a power pack.
- BlasTech DL-22 blaster pistol: Katarina typically wears this pistol holstered on the small of her back. It is accurate out to one hundred meters, and can draw one hundred shots from a power pack.
- Utility Belt: Katarina wears a belt with numerous pouches on it. The belt contains a high-tension wire, two grappling hooks, four spare blaster power packs, three ion flares, energy rations, a spare comlink (range 50-km overland or out to orbit), three water packs, two medpacs, two blast energy sinks, a thermal detonator, a combat de-ionizer, and stun binders.
- Vibroblades: Katarina wears a blade on her belt (mentioned above), as well as one on the outside of her right boot and another on her left shoulder where she can easily draw it, hidden within her garments. She wears the vibroblades in or out of her armor.
- Lightsaber: Katarina's lightsaber is a dual-phase weapon. One phase is 100 centimeters long, while the other phase is 210 centimeters long. The lightsaber's blade is silver-gold, with a trio of Durind fire-gem focusing crystals inside the hilt. The hilt is twenty-five centimeters, the case constructed of cortosis-woven duranium to protect it from enemy lightsaber attacks.
ROLE-PLAYS
- Servants of the Emperor - Wherein Kat meets Meroln Dazyn, the stormtrooper officer in command of her detachment.
