In here you'll find links to most of the important information on this site, as well as some explanation as to why it's relevant. This will be updated as I write up more.
In general, a post with a lightbulb icon (like this one) is an informational post and would be useful to read before posting in that subforum.
Board Rules
SWTOTG Rules - The general conduct rules of the board. Read these, but you'll find they're pretty much in line with basic human behavior. An inability to comply will result in ostracizing and exclusion.
RPing Rules - The conduct rules and guidelines for roleplaying.
Making a Character
Character Creation - The bare-bones information required to make a character and get started on play. The approval process is passive; your character is approved unless I state otherwise.
There are no limits to the number of characters you can have.
Custom Species
Following the guidelines here, you are able to create a custom species. The galaxy is, after all, quite large and so many star systems support life that it's all but impossible that all species are known. These species can be sentient and made for player-characters, domesticated, or even monsters meant to pose a thread to other characters.
Custom Technology
Players are able to generate custom armor, weapons, and other technology.
Custom Ships - Perhaps the most important technology to a science fantasy setting like Star Wars, characters are able to have their own unique vessels. An individual character does not have a hard limit on the size of his ship, but please keep in mind that few independents will be able to own anything larger than a medium transport. Don't forget to check the Starships Index for the vessels that other people have already made; one of them might suit you, too.
Setting
The present is 534 ABY. In the centuries between where canon left off and this site picks up, the Empire experienced a lot of peace - and a decline into corruption and decadence culminating in an extended period of civil unrest and the Empire's border systems either paying only token obeisance or even outright rebelling in the hundred or so years leading up to the present. The Fel dynasty was wiped out by the efforts of the Imperial Usurper, the Echani Kinsaris Karu, in 508 ABY, and Gaius Holt (an Imperial Senator who led the counter-revolution) was crowned Emperor. The Sith returned in 511 ABY, as the Emperor's close friend and bodyguard, the Imperial Knight Ector Vent, revealed himself to be Darth Adas. The Imperial Civil War ended in about 518 ABY with a stalemate between the factions after the disastrous Imperial defeat at Kuat, and they've spent the last sixteen years with everyone pursuing their own agendas as a state of cold war existed between the Sith and the allied forces. Most notably, Darth Adas is attempting to re-create the Golden Age of the Sith - including alchemically transmuting his FS subjects into Red Sith.
Galaxy Map - The currently territory-less version of the galactic map.
The current factions are as follows:

Galaxy Map - The currently territory-less version of the galactic map.
The current factions are as follows:
- Galactic Alliance - Though much diminished territorially and formerly a laughingstock militarily, the Alliance distinguished itself in defense of the Empire against the Sith rebellion and has found itself in the unenviable position of being obligated to further assist the Empire in reconstruction lest the Sith win the post-war, too. The Alliance capital is Mon Calamari, but Corellia and Fondor are also important worlds.
- Jedi Order - Apolitical warrior-monks who follow the Light Side of the Force. The Jedi are centered around a handful of temples, each of which has a distinctive culture of its own.
The Temple Academy of Yavin IV, rebuilt after the Yuuzhan Vong War razed it to the ground, trains the more militant of the Jedi - and those Jedi who are most in danger of falling to the Dark Side. It takes the older students as well, and has no junior apprentices.
The Dantooine Academy is more a university and boarding school than a temple, and it even takes non-Jedi students. It is where all junior apprentices begin, and has many older students whose paths are more along intellectual lines.
The Dac Temple has few students, but trains those Jedi whose interests lie in diplomacy. The Dac Temple is the headquarters of the Jedi Order. It is in the capital of the Galactic Alliance, and has played a major role in restoring the planet after Darth Krayt's Sith exterminated nearly all life on it during the Imperial-Sith War. - Galactic Empire - An autocratic, militant power, the Galactic Empire is reeling from centuries of corruption and a devastating civil war. The new Emperor, Gaius Holt, is working hard to restore the Empire to its former glory. The Imperial Capital is Coruscant, but the Emperor has favored his homeworld of Anaxes as well.
- Sith Empire - Think 'Golden Age of the Sith' and you're on the right track. The Empire is divided up into castes, with all non-Sith at the bottom as Grotthu slaves. Above them are the Massassi warriors, the Zuguruk technicians and scientists, and the Kissai politicians, administrators, and priests. The highest caste are the One Sith. The caste system is immutable; Massassi cannot become Kissai. However, Sith can move up in rank to become Lords - or fall to become slaves. Once slaves, they can never ascend. The Sith capital is Eriadu.
- Mandalorians - Renowned for their fighting ability, the famed Mandalorian Clans are in a tender and vulnerable phase of new ideas and clan war.
- Hapes Consortium - The Consortium is perhaps the next major player on the galactic scene, as the Imperial Usurper, Kinsaris Karu, is the Royal High Commander and rumored to be Queen Mother Jaina Dai's consort as well.
- Chiss Ascendancy - The Chiss watch over the galaxy and the Unknown Regions alike, manipulating behind the scenes in order to achieve their secret objectives.
- Yuuzhan Vong - These fierce, noble warriors roam the Unknown Regions and the Outer Rim aboard their living ships. They practically worship the Jedi, and do not take well to those who threaten their living gods.
- Crime Lords - Not truly a united faction, the Crime Lords instead encompasses a number of criminal organizations. Competitors more often than not, they only cooperate when it's in their best interest and have a tendency to turn on each other at the first sign of weakness.
The Hutts are most powerful in Hutt Space and have a presence throughout the Outer Rim territories.
The Black Sun has the most influence in Imperial space, having benefitted from a long association with the more corrupt Emperors. The Galactic Emperor has made a recent effort at driving the Black Sun out, but his efforts have been less than successful.
The Exchange holds the most sway in the Core and Inner Rim, in the older and more established worlds.
