Common Name: Vonduun Skerr Kyrric Manufacturer: Shapers' Guilds Model: Vonduun crab armor Affiliation: Yuuzhan Vong. Composition: Vonduun crab shells Classification: Bio-armor Weight: Warrior 2 kg, subaltern 3 kg, subcommander 4 kg, commander 5 kg, supreme commander 6 kg, warmaster 8 kg. Description: Vonduun Skerr Kyrric, more commonly known as Vonduun crab armor, is bioengineered crab-shell-plated armor the warrior caste of the Yuuzhan Vong wear as a symbol of their rank and as a practical matter to protect them from enemy attack. Typically black, but cerulean and red are possible as colors as well - with other shades being rarely seen and typically only as a vanity of the warrior in question - the armor is made from segmented, overlapping plates of crystalline chitin. The armor is made from the living shell of the Vonduun crab, which emits a peculiar energy field that makes it more resistant to attacks than its organic nature might otherwise indicate. Vonduun crab armor is resistant to blasters, slugthrowers, and even lightsabers, growing thicker and more resilient as it ages, though with that strength comes the price of increased weight and bulk. Vonduun crab armor is weakest at the joints and abdomen, where the plates are smaller, thinner, and have frequent joins. No variety of Vonduun crab armor protects the wearer's head, though they do protect the neck and sometimes the back of the skull as well. |
Certain varieties of Vonduun crab armor augment wearers' strength, and many warriors have biots grafted onto their armor to expand its utility in parallel to the way the races of the Promised Land graft tools and weapons onto their armor.
The Vonduun crab armors have spear-like legs located at the wearer's joints and back, extremely sharp and usable as weapons. Like the rest of the crab shell, they have an energy field that extends about a millimeter from the surface. Like the related amphistaff, the hard energy fields on the cutting parts of the legs are extremely 'sharp' and able to cut as well as a vibroblade with their destructive energy.
Vonduun crab armors retain the ancestral vulnerability to bafforr pollen, and as living armor is vulnerable to biochemical attacks in much the same way as other Yuuzhan Vong biots are. Most notably, the armor does not ablate like normal armors do; damage to one part of the armor impacts the entire suit, eventually weakening and even killing the armor. Dead armor is practically useless, losing its protective energy field and falling from the wearer's body. Worse, the armor releases toxins into the wearer's bloodstream as it dies, weakening and even killing the wearer if he is vulnerable enough. Mortally wounded Yuuzhan Vong warriors are unlikely to survive, as if their wounds do not kill them their armor will.
- Warrior: This armor can repel only a glancing blow from a lightsaber, though it can absorb one-three blaster pistol shots and one or two blaster rifle shots. It is only a light armor, only somewhat effective against anything but light attacks - unarmed strikes, melee attacks, shrapnel, and the like. However, it is also the most flexible and lightest of the armor phenotypes, roughly the equivalent of a padded flight suit.
- Subaltern: This armor can repel a light blow from a lightsaber. While slightly heavier than the warrior-level armor, it's still barely effective against blasters but is able to repel most vibro-weapons and practically negating unpowered melee weapons. The armor can absorb about three-four blaster pistol shots, two-three blaster rifle shots (or their equivalents in projectiles). It is still a light and flexible armor phenotype, roughly the equivalent of padded battle armor.
- Subcommander: This armor can repel an average strike from a lightsaber. It can absorb most of the damage from a blaster pistol and about half of the damage from a blaster rifle, as well as repelling all but the most direct and critical strikes from vibro-weapons. The armor can absorb about five-seven blaster pistol shots, three-five blaster rifle shots, or perhaps one blaster cannon shot (or their equivalents in projectiles). It is medium-weight armor, roughly the equivalent of light battle armor.
- Commander: This armor can repel a solid hit from a lightsaber, but will crumble under sustained contact as the lightsaber's containment field overwhelms the armor's own protective fields. It can absorb most of the damage from a blaster pistol and take the bulk of a blaster rifle's assault, and negates most of the damage from most physical attacks. Continued attacks will overwhelm the armor's defenses, ablating the living plating away to expose the vulnerable warrior beneath. The armor can absorb up to a dozen blaster pistol shots, four-five blaster rifle shots, or one-two blaster cannon shots (or their equivalents in projectiles). It is heavy armor, roughly the equivalent of battle armor.
- Supreme Commander: This armor can readily repel all but the most powerful blows from a lightsaber, but like the commander-level armor will eventually fail with sustained contact. The armor can absorb all but the most critical of hits from a blaster pistol and the bulk of a blaster rifle's damage, and negate most of the damage from physical attacks. Sustained attacks will wear the armor down, typically taking up to a dozen blaster pistol shots, five-seven blaster rifle shots, or one-three blaster cannon shots (or their equivalents in projectiles). It is heavy armor, roughly the equivalent of heavy battle armor.
- Warmaster: This armor is essentially the same as the armor of the supreme commanders, though it is somewhat more resilient. The main defining feature is that it is particularly ornate and bears many unique bits, having been induced into its final metamorphosis in a secretive ritual upon its wearer's ascension to the exalted rank of warmaster. It is a heavy armor, roughly the equivalent of heavy battle armor, and each suit is unique to the warmaster who wears it.
