An interplanetary fiefdom administered by a brutal and tyrannical corporatocracy, the CSA originated in 490 BBY in order to resolve differences between Old Republic lawmakers and the heads of many of the larger corporations on the Outer Rim. While ostensibly operating under Republic supervision and supposedly in a sector devoid of sentient life, the corporations were able to do whatever they pleased in their sector of space. It only grew worse after the Clone Wars, as Emperor Palpatine allowed the Corporate Sector Authority to expand to include nearly thirty thousand star systems. They pay the Empire a stipend of three percent of the sector's gross product, as well as a tithe of materials and ore produced, and in exchange they are allotted near-total freedom to do as the corporations wish with the planets and the people on them.
The CSA military, known as Espos, has a reputation for brutality that they demonstrated quite ably in the Imperial Civil War. Slave revolts throughout the Corporate Sector prevented the Security Division from aiding the Empire, but the CSA spared none when they cracked down brutally on the revolts.
Save for economic activity, the CSA has as little to do with the outside galaxy as possible. It is a client state of the Galactic Empire and continues to pay its taxes, but aside from that it is perfectly happy to let the galaxy go about its business so long as they continue to buy and sell product for profit. The Alliance has a trade embargo on the CSA for the corporations' refusal to abolish debt slavery, while Jedi are officially forbidden entry into the Corporate Sector.
